Hybrid Solar Plant Extremadura III

Hybrid Solar Photovoltaic Plant located in Almendralejo, Badajoz

The Extremadura III solar plant is part of the Extremadura I-II-III photovoltaic complex located in the municipality of Almendralejo (Badajoz). It is one of three plots integrated into the project totaling 125 MWp (231,560 panels), 300 hectares; Extremadura III has almost 25 MWp and was built within the same package by ACCIONA Energía, which executed the work and operates the complex. Construction began in November 2021 and the complex entered service in January 2023.

The installation is in the municipality of Almendralejo. The plant is located approximately 4–5 km northwest of the town center.

The promoter/applicant registered in the official files is Desarrollos Renovables Eólicos y Solares, SLU. Initially, Extremadura III was budgeted at 11,820,296 € for the total material execution of the project.

In 2023, Acciona initiated administrative procedures to hybridize this plant with a 10 MW battery energy storage system (BESS). This BESS storage consists of 10 lithium battery storage containers of 1 MW and 2.5 MWh each, which will be installed in two phases: a first phase where 2 cells are installed (2 MW / 5 MWh), and a second phase where 8 more cells are installed (up to 10 MW). The installation of the 10 battery cells represents an investment of more than 7M€. The battery systems include the installation of 2 conversion and management stations with a 1,365 kVA, 30/0.51 kV transformer and, in the second phase, 2 more conversion and management stations with a 5,828 kVA, 30/0.50 kV transformer.

According to Acciona, the batteries used in the project include second-life units from Silence electric vehicles and new batteries from electric cars.

As of December 2025, the access and connection capacity declared in REE amounts to 21.74 MW (19.74 MW from the photovoltaic unit + 2 MW from BESS).

According to the Administrative Registry of Electricity Production Facilities in Spain (RAIPEE), this storage unit was registered on November 12, 2025 with the first 2 MW.
